Summer is officially here in Eastern North Carolina, and for a lot of Pitt County families that means one thing: it's time to load up and head for the coast. Whether you're making the easy run down to Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle on the Crystal Coast or pointing it north toward the Outer Banks, the last thing you want is car trouble on the shoulder of Highway 70 in the July heat.
Before you pack the cooler and the beach chairs, set aside an hour to make sure your used truck or SUV is ready for the miles ahead. Here's the summer road-trip checklist we walk our customers through at Bells Fork Truck & Auto.
Test Your A/C Before You Actually Need It
Eastern NC summers don't play around, and a marginal A/C system that gets by in May will feel miserable in 95-degree heat with a packed cabin. Turn it on full blast and make sure it blows genuinely cold within a minute or two. Weak or warm air usually means a low refrigerant charge or a failing component — far cheaper to sort out in your driveway than at a beach-town shop on a holiday weekend.
Check Your Cooling System So You Don't Overheat
Hot pavement, stop-and-go beach traffic, and a heavy load all push your engine harder. Check that your coolant is topped off and clean, look for any seepage around hoses, and pay attention to your temperature gauge on the way out of town. An overheating engine is one of the most common — and most preventable — ways a summer trip gets cut short.
Inspect Your Tires (Including the Spare)
Heat raises tire pressure and accelerates wear, and a worn tire on hot asphalt is a blowout waiting to happen. Check tread depth, look for cracks or bulges in the sidewalls, and set your pressures to the spec on the door-jamb sticker. Then do the thing most people skip: confirm your spare is aired up and your jack is actually in the vehicle.
Don't Forget Brakes and Fluids
If you're hauling a boat, a camper, or a truck bed full of gear, your brakes work harder than they do on a normal commute. Listen for grinding or squealing and notice any softness in the pedal. While you're at it, check your oil, brake fluid, and washer fluid — a quick top-off now beats a roadside scramble later.
Test the Battery
It's a myth that batteries only die in winter. Extreme summer heat is actually harder on a battery than cold, and a weak one can leave you stranded in a beach parking lot far from home. If your battery is more than three or four years old, have it tested before you go.
Pack a Simple Summer Emergency Kit
You don't need much: water, a phone charger, basic tools, a flashlight, jumper cables, and a small first-aid kit. Add sunscreen and a beach umbrella while you're at it. Ten minutes of packing buys a lot of peace of mind on a long drive.
Is Your Current Ride Up to the Trip?
Sometimes the honest answer is that your vehicle has done its time, and you'd rather not gamble a family vacation on it. If you're in the market for a dependable used truck or SUV that's ready for Eastern NC summers — A/C that works, tires that are good to go, and the cargo room for everything the beach demands — come see us.
At Bells Fork Truck & Auto in Greenville, we serve families across Pitt County and Eastern NC, and every vehicle on our lot is inspected and ready to roll. Stop by, browse our inventory online, or give us a call. We'll help you find something that's ready for the coast and everything after it.
